In a little park, across the street from the South Pole Inn, is this statue of Crean holding two husky puppies. It is based on a photo of him holding the dogs. Huskies were to be used to pull sleds once the expedition had landed on the Antarctic. For the earlier expeditions, Captain Robert Falcon Scott chose to use men pulling sleds rather than dogs. This is considered to be a significant factor in his ultimate and disastrous failure.
